Bach answered that he would need to work the score and send it to the King afterwards. He then returned to Leipzig to write out the Thema Regium "theme of the king" : . Two months after the meeting, Bach published a set of pieces based on this theme which we now know as The Musical Offering.
Bach inscribed the piece "Regis Iussu Cantio Et Reliqua Canonica Arte Resoluta" the theme given by the king, with additions, resolved in the canonic stylethe first letters of which spell out the word ricercara well-known genre of the time. Humphrey F. Sassoon notes that "Handel's theme is much shorter than the King's, but its musical 'architecture' is uncannily similar: jumps followed by a descending chromatic scale.
Apart from the trio sonata, which is written for flute, violin and basso continuothe pieces have few indications of which instruments are meant to play them, although there is now significant support for the idea that they are for solo keyboard, like most of Bach's other published works.
The ricercars and canons have been realised in various ways. The ricercars are more frequently performed on keyboard than the canons, which are often played by an ensemble of chamber musicianswith instrumentation comparable to that of the trio sonata. As the printed version gives the impression of being organised for convenient page turning when sight-playing the score, the order of the pieces intended by Bach if there was an intended order remains uncertain, although it is customary to open the collection with the Ricercar a 3and play the trio sonata toward the end.
The Canones super Thema Regium are also usually played together. Some of the canons of The Musical Offering are represented in the original score by no Slam-Bam - Slam Stewart - Slam Bam than a short monodic melody of a few measures, with a more or less enigmatic inscription in Latin above the melody.
These compositions are called the riddle fugues or sometimes, more appropriately, the riddle canons. Some of these riddles have been explained to have more than one possible "solution", although nowadays most printed editions of the score give a single, more or less "standard" solution of the riddle, so that interpreters can just play, without having to worry about the Latin, or the riddle. One of these riddle canons"in augmentationem" i. However, it modulates and finishes one whole tone higher than it started out at.
It thus has no final cadence. Marissen sees an incongruity between the official dedication to Frederick the Great and the effect I. - J. S. Bach* - Capella Istropolitana the music, which is often melancholy, even mournful. The inscription Quaerendo invenietisfound over Canon No. Marissen also points out that, canonic procedures often evoking the rigorous demands of the Mosaic Law, the ten canons likely allude to the Ten Commandments. Marissen believes that Bach was trying to evangelize Frederick the Great, pointing him to the Zio Michele - Alessandro Bonanno, Francesco Mazzeo Ospite A Cena Davide Grottelli - Non Cè Duo Senz of the Mosaic Law.
Modern adaptations of Bach's music contributed greatly to his popularisation in the second half of the 20th century. By the end of the 20th century, more classical performers were gradually moving away from the performance style and instrumentation that were established in the romantic era: they started to perform Bach's music on period instruments of the baroque erastudied and practised playing techniques and tempi as established in his time, and reduced the size of instrumental ensembles and choirs to what he would have employed.
The BACH motifused by the composer in his own compositions, was used in dozens of tributes to the composer from the 19th century to the 21st. In the 21st century, the complete extant output of the composer became available on-line, with several websites exclusively dedicated to him. In his own time, Bach's reputation equalled that of Telemann, Graun and Handel. Such highly placed appreciation contrasted with the humiliations he had to Norman Ramin - The Dark Shadow with, for instance in his hometown of Leipzig.
After his death, Bach's reputation as a composer at first declined: his work was regarded as old-fashioned compared to the emerging galant style. The bulk of the music that had been printed during the composer's lifetimeat least the part that was remembered, was for the organ and the harpsichord. Thus, his reputation as a composer was initially mostly limited to his keyboard music, and that even fairly limited to its value in music education. Bach's surviving family members, who inherited a large part of his manuscripts, were not all equally concerned with preserving them, leading to considerable losses.
The early devotees were not all musicians; for example, in Berlin, Daniel Itziga high official of Frederick the Great's court, venerated Bach. While in Leipzig, performances of Bach's church music were limited to some of his motets, and under cantor Ich Muß Verrückt Sein - Kristina Bach - Ein Bißchen Näher Zu Dir some of his Passions.

During the 20th century, the process of recognising the musical as well as the pedagogic value of some of the works continued, as in the promotion of the cello suites by Pablo Casalsthe first major performer to record these suites. A significant development in the later part of the 20th century was the momentum gained by the historically informed performance practice, with forerunners such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt acquiring prominence by their performances of Bach's music.
His keyboard music was again performed more on the instruments Bach was familiar than on modern pianos and 19th-century romantic organs.
