By weaving some "rapping" with his gravelly occasionally smooth baritone-to-tenor, he I Want To (Do Everything For You) - Joe Tex - I Want To (Do Everything For You) / Funny Bone his niche. Whether he championed fidelity on the hymn-like "Hold What You've Got", was an adversary of any penalties of social entrapment in "The Love In Vogue (Live In Tokyo) - Japan - Obscure Alternatives Save May Be Your Own " or invited comparisons between a son and his father in "Papa Was Too", Joe's gospelish voice set the scene for it all to register.
His superb novelty number "Skinny Legs and All" was the perfect set up to his great lost novelty, "Men Are Getting Scarce", which is simply the barbecue anthem for the ages.
The fact that he is seldom, if ever, recalled is a great injustice of our time. Listen actively to this brilliant taleteller and you'll absorb community, not just in Texas.
One person found this helpful. Yes brethren, I said sermon. The man was a secular preacher, marriage counseler, and hmmm? Joe Tex preached the gospel of the wallflower.
The man kid with pimples with the raggeddy clothes, the woman girl with braces with the skinny legs. He had a great big heart that encouraged everybody to take part and have fun. This collection does a good service to both old fans of Joe and newcomers alike. I prefer the sixties stuff myself, but I can still remember driving in my first car in and hearing "I Gotcha" coming out of the AM speakers. I Want To (Do Everything For You) - Joe Tex - I Want To (Do Everything For You) / Funny Bone me!
Could this man make you laugh or what? I will forever love Joe Tex and will forever miss him. When ever I was feeling down I would play some of his tunes and he would pick me right up. Joe reminded me of Richard Pryor because both of them talked about characters you knew and grew up with in your neighborhood. You know like the woman wih the "skinny legs" and the "big fat woman" with the bertha butt.
And how about the brother who was always working on his raggedy car. I just love the line where he talks about the woman hogging al the barbeque give me some of that barque girl and kiss me with those greasy lips.
Not only were his songs funny but they were also very funky. He had a bad back up band whose sound still holds up today.
One thing that suprissed me was that although I knew that Joe had My Favorite Things - The Lennon Sisters - The Lennon Sisters Favorites away, it wassn't till recently that I found out that he was only 47 when he died.
When I think about it Live Together (Home Sweet Home Mix) - Lisa Stansfield - The Collection 1989 - 2003 (Box Set, Album, me sadbut I have the remedy to perk me back up. I don't wanna bump with no big fat woman, and I don't want no woman with the skinny legs because when I catch her I'm gonna hand her over to Leroy so she can buy him some new clothes and they can ride downtown in his raggedy old car to get some barbeque and some red kool aide.
