Actually, the band had never split up, just taken a long break - now the same six members made more intense music than ever before, songs full of experience and self-reliance. There is melancholy here, but also a kind of sunlit calm and trust in the power of the music. How rare to hear a band that has developed so much on its own terms! The explanation may be that the War never really had split up, just taken a long break after those intense years between andwhen they made five albums, played all over Sweden and even toured Great Britain, a rare thing for a Swedish band in that time.
Then one day they gathered again, the same six members, bringing their instruments, amplifiers and new songs. And with a punch and a certainty that comes from having outgrown all compromise, of having become as one with their own music, the album "The Fire of Years" was recorded. On stage, the War performed a seamless mixture of old hits and new songs, proving that they formed a perfect unity.
What was once labelled "progressive rock" had quite simply become War music. The new album "After After" concludes the trilogy that began with 's "The Fire of Years" and was continued by "In the Beginning and the End" in The Thirty Years War may never have made more tightly-knit albums than in its phase II the exception being the classic "Warsong" fromand in a new way, moods and emotions are now the governing factor.
The War tells its long story in a more insightful and moving way than what most bands are capable of. The new millenium has seen TKr become a highly international band. Their albums have been re-issued both in Europe and in a deluxe Japanese set, they have played the US, Mexico, Brazil Gigs are now lined up in Belgium and Canada, as well as release concerts in Sweden.
And then? What happens after "After After"? Hey, I can happily relate to music like this! My attention suitably aroused. On this album the band is very close to what Pink Floyd were about around Tasteful, laid Trettioåriga Kriget - Efter Efter no stress compositions laced with nice guitar work, also reminiscent of early Gilmour approaches.
There is even a hint of SBB in parts. The vocals appear to be somewhat less impressive, but since I don't speak the language, I can't comment on their value as in poetry. What impresses the most is that they don't try too hard, not trying to impress!
Heartfelt music, not made to cater for Top10, or to please the record industry, or to score dumb groupies.
No doubt, the music is simple and uncomplicated and therein is it's true value. Recommended for those who can't have enough of early Pink Floyd. There are some weaker moments, but as a whole it easily qualifies for rating of 4.
A footnote. When reading reviews on PA, I generally bypass Crossover - under which this band is currently listed and something that I am not in agreement with. Had it not been for my friend, I would never have displayed any interest as such. In Sweden there was a strong political agenda associated with prog or progg, as it is known. There were many bands, not all musically gifted.
Alot of bands were actually musically challenged, if you wish. The musical content with it's very prominent bass is amazing. Not only in the playing but more so in the songs themselves. It is a blend of hard rock, symphonic and fusion like stuff. I think of Stanley Clarke, sometimes, and maybe I am not that far off. Stanley Clarke playing in Rush, could be a comparison not straying too far off the mark.
From the first second to the last, this album delivers in spades and keeps on being spellbinding. This is a masterful and epic creation, worthy of praise and recognition. Listen and be amazed. The first track Mannen Pa Banken immediately hooks you. It has some great guitar playing by Christer and Robert Zima's voice is pleasant. If I had to compare his voice with anyone's it would probably be Roine Stolt's, but in my opinion Robert's is less of an acquired taste.
I also think Stefan is great bass player and they really give him his places to shine, I imagine this is due to him being the main songwriter. Barnet is another great track, reminiscent of the Flower Kings, I especially enjoy Dag Lundquist's drumming, and I think this is one of the best track for Robert's vocals. The Dance is probably my favorite on the album with opener.
It is Nurse Ratched - Cherry Glazerr - Apocalipstick very good instrumental, I love Christer's guitar tone on this track.
I The Liberated Date - Jerry Stiller & Anne Meara - Laugh When You Like love the song Glorious war, another great one for Robert.
The Title track Efter Efter is the longest song on the album and another highlight. Feature's more keyboard than most of the album. The Rest of the album is mostly three star material, nothing I would want to come back to frequently.
Boring mostly but a pleasant occasional listen. Overall I Give this a 3. I recommend to this to any fan of Anglagard, The Flower Kings, or any fan of guitar oriented prog in general. Before I go off into ramble tamble land here, I'd like to point out that this longish Swedish marathon will have a tiny break after this one, the 10th in a row, Robot Movement (Vocal) - Cybernet Systems - Roboticist EP I promise to return to it, as this country's more obscure musical ventures still need all the love I can possibly bring myself to muster up.
To-the-point songwriting. Tight short tracks, and a melodic hard rock touch to it all. This album encapsulates everything about the guy from Sweden you run into during a Roskilde Festival. He likes his drink, that's for sure. He is head over heels in love with rock, and plays air guitar in his dreams - including those he experiences in daylight.
I've met my fair share of these guys, and Roskilde wouldn't feel right without 'em. They inspire me to put an album like this on, when I get back into my camp, and if he by some miracle is living inside an audible radius from the music, you're attacked by this caveman scream, for then to be facing a gurgling wild beast 2 seconds later - his hands holding a six pack of warm beers and a half drunken bottle of Jack Daniels. Although it's been a while since the two have talked, you Trettioåriga Kriget - Efter Efter of get the impression, that the make-up Trettioåriga Kriget - Efter Efter is going to be quite spectacular once it gets going.
Problem is that it took these guys a bit of time to correlate all these different factors into one big hefty type of deal - with all the exhausts pointing in the same direction. The mix here is really wonderful, don't get me wrong. I happen to love this album, but the instant feel good sensation of the album you get, when you first start playing it, wears off over time - especially if you've recently started digging down in the Trettioåriga Kriget - Efter Efter complex of progressive musical corridors.
It kicks ass, gives off its melodies in an orderly and tight fashion - with absolutely nothing left for the imagination, and to tell you the truth, I get more turned on, when women are wearing feather boas and cucumber dresses with a pound of stardust sprinkled over them.
Just like my music, some things are best left for time, wit, imagination and sleepless nights to figure out. Still, I'd recommend this album to anyone into 70s rock in Jack Of All Trades - Andy Timmons - Action 80 - Hot Fingers 2 heart beat - no question about it.
The Swedish vocals are charming and lingering, the guitar playing largely built up around melodic riffing, and already you've got that good old recipe cooking like a lofty kitchen matador doing his thing. Accompanying a steady and So Sad About Us - Shaun Cassidy - Wasp recorded drum beat, you're often treated to different Trettioåriga Kriget - Efter Efter of rhythmic back-door keyboard wizardry, such as the Stevie Wonder inspired Horner clavinet.
Music can be a violent and chameleon like mistress with spikes of Medusa snakes coming out its eyes, but it can also be a jolly old fat fellow singing merrily and heartfelt without ever really surprising you. I'll leave it up to you, which one of these this particular album falls under. It's still a 3. It will almost certainly knock your socks off instantly - so let's just hope it stays that way Copyright Prog Archives, All rights reserved.
